Concert for Ukraine

The Songs & Dance of a People

Ой у лузі червона калина – (Oi u luzi chervona kalyna) a Ukrainian patriotic song first appeared in the late 1800s, and soon became one of the most beloved expressions of Ukrainian patriotism. Therefore, it is known to have many versions and covers.

The red viburnum of the song (kalyna in Ukrainian)—a deciduous shrub that grows four to five metres tall—is referenced throughout Ukrainian folklore. The red viburnum has a special national appeal and its silhouette  is depicted along the edges of the flag of the president of Ukraine.

Hopak (Ukrainian: гопа́к) is a Ukrainian folk dance. It is often popularly referred to as the “National dance of Ukraine”, and is commonly performed by both professional and amature dancers at events throughout the country and abroad.
