Celebrating Our Neighborhood: History of Haiti

August 29 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

Join us for the fourth-annual Celebrating Our Neighborhood event series in partnership with Louisville Free Public Libraries (LFPL), as we explore and showcase the arts and culture of Haiti!

For the second event in this three-part series, Dr. Crystal Felima, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and African American & Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky, will discuss the complex history of the first Black Republic and the second independent country in the Western Hemisphere.  The History of Haiti will be presented at Bon Air Library on Saturday, August 29th, from 2:00 – 3:30 PM.

This is a free event, but registration is recommended to guarantee seating availability. REGISTER HERE or call (502) 574-1623.

Additional events in the series include the Cuisine of Haiti (July 18th – Northeast Regional Library) and the Music & Arts of Haiti (September 12th – South Central Regional Library), and feature artists, scholars and musicians from Kentucky’s Haitian communities. Check out the lineup and register at LFPL’s Celebrating Our Neighborhood event page.

About the series:
Debuting in 2023, each annual Celebrating Our Neighborhood series highlights the arts and culture of one of the many vibrant immigrant and refugee communities of Louisville across three events (cuisine, history and music/art), held at different library locations throughout the city. Previous years have showcased the arts and culture of Cuba (2023), Iraq (2024), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (2025).

This unique series not only offers the opportunity to experience and learn about a diversity of global cultures, it also aims to elevate visibility of marginalized communities as well as build bridges between neighbors. By uplifting immigrant and refugee voices, Celebrating Our Neighborhood also helps to demonstrate our shared humanity and connectedness with one another around the world.

All Celebrating Our Neighborhood events are free, but registration is recommended to guarantee seating availability. Register with LFPL HERE.
