Employment Services

Employment services provides assistance with preparation, placement, and upgrading in the work place. They assist with applications and interviews, transportation, translation, and orientation.

An important function of our agency is preparing the refugee for employment, and then placing them in a job, all within a 120 day funding period. Considerable planning and preparation is done to help the refugee make the transition into the American workplace. This employment process is obtained through the following:

Pre-Employment

ESL Program - All refugees are required to attend our ESL (English as a Second Language) classes in order to receive employment services. English skills for daily living and employment related topics are emphasized through the use of mock interviews and practice filling out applications, in addition to basic English skills.

World of Work - This is a series of four orientations that begin within 30 days of arrival. The Job Developer discusses previous work experience, education, and assess level of English skills. Employment expectations and realities are discussed at this time with an emphasis on workplace etiquette and responsibilities of the employee.

Applications and Interviews - Transportation to and from a potential job site, translation for an interview, help filling out applications, W-4s, I-9s, and any other assistance necessary is provided to help the refugee through the hiring process.

Transportation - In most cases, the refugees are dependent on public transportation for their first job. Bus schedules, shift times, and geographic location of the job site in relation to their residence are all coordinated in order to meet attendance requirements. Available transportation and reasonable travel time is critical for job acceptance.

Post Employment

Orientation and Training - Translation services are provided for intial job orientations and training periods. Condensed job descriptions, safety regulations, and other critical job related material can also be translated.
